Teachers Pay Increases |

By James Addy, Koforidua Monday, 08 January 2007 A certificate "A" teacher whose present annual salary is ¢17 million, is to receive about ¢23 million per annum from the beginning of this year.
Similarly, a Director of Education who now earns ¢37million per annum, is to receive ¢60 million per annum, President J.A. Kufuor revealed at the NPP conference here yesterday.
He said this in answer to a question put to him by a regional representative of the New Patriotic Party at the delegates conference.
Ms. Vida Adaare from Upper East Region had asked the President what the government was doing to improve the service conditions of teachers to help curb the frequent strikes embarked upon by teachers and the attendant disruption of the academic calendar. Responding, President Kufuor said the government acknowledges that quality education depends on teachers and that is why human resource development continues to be its topmost priority, adding that government would do everything to ensure that service conditions of teachers are improved.
To another question by Mr. Asare Bediako, from the Ashanti Region, on the country’s energy problems, President Kufuor said the Chinese had agreed to sign an agreement with Ghana for the development of the energy resources of the Bui Dam.
He announced that the Ministers of Finance and Energy would leave for China this week to conclude the agreement for the project.
The President expressed the hope that when completed the Bui Dam would generate about 400 megawatts of electricity to complement the 1,000 megawatts of the Akosombo Dam.
He said road projects such as the Asafo market interchange, Oforikrom and Sofoline all in Ashanti, the Tinga-Bamboi road in the Northern, Upper West region and the Banda-Kpassa in the Volta Region would be worked on this year.
He asked Ghanaians to acknowledge the savings they are making as a result of the National Health Insurance Scheme and the free school bus and feeding programmes.
Asked about his views on foreigners engaged in retail trade, the President said it is illegal and advised Ghanaians not to assist such people break the law.
