NPP Has Capable Leaders - Kufuor 1/9/2007
1/9/2007)

President J. A. Kufuor

The President, Mr J. A. Kufuor, has assured Ghanaians that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has the requisite leaders in four generations capable of steering the affairs of the country for a long period.

He, therefore, asked Ghanaians not to be misled by the opposition but to vote for the retention of the government in the 2008 elections to enable it to accomplish "its noble and justifiable policies which have started yielding good results".

The President gave the assurance when he addressed a mammoth rally as a climax to the annual national delegates congress of the NPP at the Jackson Park, Koforidua, on Sunday.

The gathering, so far the biggest in the Eastern Regional capital, was attended by thousands of the party''s faithful from the Eastern Region and other parts of the country, as well as party executives, both in Ghana and its branches in the United States, Germany, Italy, Ireland and other places.

Also in attendance were the Vice-President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, former and current NPP ministers of state and Members of Parliament (MPs) who took turns to talk about the achievements so far made by the government.

President Kufuor stated that the NPP was well focused on tackling the hydra-headed problems it inherited from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and that it had capable leaders in four generations who would take over one after another to offer good leadership to the party for a long time to complete its development agenda of making Ghana a place worth living.

"I am continuing from where seasoned, well-groomed leaders such as the late Dr Busia and Professor Adu Boahene left off and I am now drinking from the fountain of wisdom of the aged ones like Dr Dzane-Selby and Mr R. R. Amponsah and there are many more of such capable leaders in three other generations after me to hold the fort and complete the NPP''s development agenda, which is now bearing the fruits you are seeing," the President said to a thunderous applause.

President Kufuor, who elaborated on the gains so far made, such as the construction of good roads, schools, clinics, markets, the implementation of the Capitation Grant and the free school feeding programme for pupils in first-cycle educational institutions, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the various interventions to eradicate poverty, indicated that the full implementation of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) would further enhance the gains so far made.

He said the gains had also transformed the image of the country, citing the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where many citizens of other nations, including prominent persons, reported for treatment.

With regard to the provision of electricity, President Kufuor stated that its irregular supply was the result of increase demand because of the considerable rise in population and stated that plans were far advanced for the Chinese Government to assist in constructing a new dam at Bui to provide energy to supplement what was produced by the Akosombo and Kpong dams and the thermal plants in Tema and Aboadze.

On the monetary front, he said the re-denomination of the cedi would give the national currency the same value as the dollar in July to further cushion the economy and called for unity to enable the country to continue to march forward.

The Vice-President, who spoke in Hausa, said the NPP was the only hope for Ghanaians and urged the people to continue to support it to be in power for a long time to better their lot.

The National Chairman of the NPP, Mr Peter Mac Manu, said with the gains so far made, it was clear that the party would continue to dominate Ghana''s political scene for many more years.
