I Had A Good Confab’ 1/9/2007
One of the leading contenders in the flagbearership race of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has described the party’s conference in Koforidua last week as a huge success. Speaking to Daily Guide a few hours after the event, he declared, “I had a good conference.”

Nana Akufo-Addo, currently the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who did not buy the idea of carrying bus loads of support groups sarcastically referred to as “Choboi boys” to sing his praises at the conference, rather settled for the highlife maestro, “Iron Boy” Abrantie Amakye Dede to entertain delegates.

Spokesman for Friends of Nana Akufo Addo (FONNA), Mustapha Abdul Hamid, noted that since the conference was to deliberate on issues affecting the party, there was no need to bring supporters.

“It was about a party conference to deliberate on party issues; not about aspirants,” he said. Mustapha, a former National Youth Organiser of the party, indicated it was a tactical decision not to allow supporters to storm the conference in the Minister’s T-shirts.

However, he said Nana Addo was overwhelmed by the support he received at the conference. When the Foreign Minister arrived at the conference ground in a two-vehicle convoy, he walked straight to the waiting hands of party activists who hailed him. He subsequently embraced and shook hands with them while responding to cheers from some who shouted, “Nana O! Nana O!!”

However, the main show took place in the evening of Saturday when delegates retired to Nana’s place at C.S. Appenteng’s house near the Eredec Hotel, the conference venue, for good music and food. Linda D’Or Catering Services served the delegates with food and drinks after which they jumped on their feet to the tunes of Abrantie Amakye Dede.

Even supporters of other candidates in T-shirts of their mentors were not left out in the freebies as they “chopped” and sipped drinks. Mustapha said the show was a stage to refresh the delegates. The marathon conference ended around 9.00pm.

Some ministers and MPs also demonstrated their dancing skills when they took to the floor. However, Major Courage Quashigah, Minister of Health, was the cynosure of the night, as he sang, played musical instruments and danced his heart out to the admiration of the delegates who yearned for more.
