President J.A. Kufuor says his Government has kept faith with the citizenry and continues to deliver on its promises since assuming the reigns of government.
Addressing the sixth edition of the Peoples’ Assembly held at Sunyani, President Kufuor said while the desire of the people for freedom still prevails, the government on its part remains committed to the rule of law, freedom and justice, equality of all before the law, freedom of speech, of religion, of association and respect for gender balance.
He said the NPP Government, on assumption of office sought to address the decline in the economy, modernize agriculture and expand the level of infrastructural development.
It also aimed at making education accessible and affordable to all, apart from the aggressive pursuit of reforms in the private sector to ensure it became the engine of growth for the economy.
President Kufuor said the vision of the Government remained getting the country to achieve at least $1000 per capita income within the next ten years.
He said all economic indicators were positive for the country, including low interest rates, inflation, and availability of credit for businesses among others. “The collapsed economy is on the path of fast recovery” he said.
President Kufuor said the effective management of the economy had led to its stability and it remained the mainstay of the upcoming July redenomination of the cedi, which would peg the New Ghana Cedi on equal footing as the US dollar.
Describing the forum as the Jubilee Peoples’ Assembly, he said Jubilee years mark the end and beginning of great landmarks in the annals of nations across the globe and recalled that at independence, so much confidence in the ability of Ghana to succeed saw non Ghanaians acquiring Ghanaian passports.
He said it was that level of confidence that his Government sought to restore to the nation and make her citizenry proud.
President Kufuor called on the leadership of all political parties, interest groups and indeed all Ghanaians to join in the Jubilee celebration of the nation’s independence.
According to the President, the Jubilee celebration should not bee seen as an event for his administration alone.
He was also not happy about the increasing reports of guinea worm infection cases in parts of the country.
The hugely peaceful forum recorded a discomforting scene when a known NDC serial radio caller, Dr. Asem Foforo of Jumapo near Koforidua in the Eastern Region, was heckled by supporters of the ruling party when he asked why the Government was attempting to prosecute former President Rawlings when no Ministers in the present administration had been tried for alleged corruption.
And among the numerous people aspiring to succeed President Kufuor as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2008 polls, only former Minister Nkrabeah Effah Darteh had his fliers distributed at the national event. He comes from the region though.
The objective of the Peoples Assembly has been to bring the Executive arm of Government face to face with the citizenry for direct interactions.
