| Mrs. Rawlings Lands At Appeal Court |

The former first Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has filed an appeal at the Appeal Court challenging a ruling by an Accra Fast Track Court that she owes the State in the matter of the acquisition of GIHOC Nsawam Cannery by Caridem Development Limited. Parties to be affected by the appeal are Ato Sam (Baby Ansaba) of the New Punch, Mrs. Gina Ama Zigah Blay, Managing Editor of the Daily Guide and Western Publications Limited.
According to Mrs. Rawlings, the High Court ruling was against the weight of evidence. Through her lawyer, Mr. Tony Lithur, the former first lady, who recently accused President Kufuor, of filing the courts with his ‘brothers’, is seeking the Appellate court to overturn a ruling by Mrs. Iris May Brown’s Fast Track High Court that the Daily Guide had not libelled her when it said in a headline that she owed the state ¢2.8bn.
Consequently, the appellant is seeking relief such as, a reversal of the Judgement of the court that sat on her case and an entry of Judgement in favour of plaintiff/appellant, an award of damages to plaintiff/Appellant within the terms of the endorsement of the plaintiff’s writ of summons. She is also seeking an award of substantial costs to the plaintiff/appellant.
Among others the ruling given on November 16th 2006 stated that the former first Lady was not entitled to any damages for libel as she was demanding because the Daily Guide had been able to prove that her company, Caridem, of which she was the Executive Chairman owed the state to that tune. The former first lady complained of the whole judgement saying plaintiffs (Daily Guide & Co) did not deserve to win her case against them.
