The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency in the Wassa West District, Hon. Mrs. Eugenia Gifty Kusi has expressed deep concern on the high number of the disabled in the streets.
She is of the view that if the society is to render to them the love, care and commitment they deserve, the number of people with disability in our streets would be drastically reduced, if not completely eliminated.
Hon. Gifty Kusi made the assertion at the 21st Anniversary of the Wassa-West Association of the Physically Challenged at the forecourt of the Tarkwa Community Centre recently.
The MP reiterated that all should help to protect, support and care for the physically challenged to enable them to live comfortably.
She attributed the cause of large number of the disabled begging for alms on the street to their neglect by the society and appealed to all and sundry to accept and love them saying, "We are our brother’s keeper."
Hon. Gifty Kusi promised to assist the association on its piggery project and also pledged to give it a seed money of ¢20 million.
On his part, the Tarkwa District Social Welfare Officer, Mr. Abraham Quayson, entreated the family of the physically challenged to show concern towards them and give them the maximum assistance to enable them attend schools, learn trade and participate productively in farming and community life.
