Registration Of Cabbies Starts 2/13/2007
Monday, 12 February 2007
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has commenced the registration of all taxis which operates in the city. The move is to ensure security and easy identification of taxis in service within the Accra Metropolis. According to the assembly, every taxi driver is to register with AMA, which registration demanded that they provided a commercial drivers licence and ¢250,000 to cater for the embossment of numbers on the two front doors of the taxi at Sikkens, a well known paint manufacturing company.

After the embossment, the drivers, he said were expected to pay an additional ¢35,000 for the renewal of an AMA sticker and further ¢36,000 for a commercial driving license. Meanwhile, when Daily Guide visited the vehicle permit unit at AMA on Wednesday, only 147 drivers had registered. Speaking to the newspaper, Mr. Abature Ali Baba, Special Assistant to the AMA Mayor said the registration period would last till the end of February.

Cautioning that after the registration exercise, “any taxi driver seen conducting business within the metropolis without the sea-blue and dark-blue uniform and serial number would be arrested,” he warned that driver would not only be arrested but fined and prosecuted by the Motor Traffic Court. He disclosed that a driver from a different metropolis would be allowed to ‘drop’ a passenger but go back immediately, and not allowed to operate within the metropolis. “If the driver does not comply, he would be arrested by the police and metro guards,” he alerted.

The essence of the embossment, he explained, was to ensure no one could scratch or destroy it till that particular car was rotten. One advantage to it, the special assistant said, was to make easier the identification of drivers who used their taxis for robbery. In this view, he advised all taxi drivers to consider the registration exercise.
