WANEP boss opposes government’s arms plans 2/13/2007
The Executive Director of the West African Network for Peace Building, WANEP has kicked against government’s stance to legalize the production of small arms.

According to Emmanuel Bombande, an attempt to legalize small arms production will rather encourage massive clandestine production and distribution of arms which will see Ghana become the centre of the small arms trade in the sub region.

The Deputy Minister of the Interior, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, had said that government will be pushing for the legalization of small arms production.

Speaking to Joy News at the international consultative conference on small arms currently underway in Accra, Kwaku Agyemang Manu argued that a legalization policy will streamline the activities of producers of small arms and bring them into the open for proper monitoring.

But according to Emmanuel Bombande, the policy was set to backfire since the country lacked the ability to effectively monitor production and sale of small arms if it was legalized.

Emmanuel Ennin, Head of the Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution Department of the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre, one of the advocates of the small arms legalization policy said however, legalizing it rather would help monitor its production.
