The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected Major Derek Yaw Oduro, 49, as the party''s parliamentary candidate to contest the Nkoranza North Constituency by-election scheduled to take place on March 13 in the Brong Ahafo Region. Major Oduro, who is also the Presiding Member of the Nkoranza District Assembly and a businessman, beat three other aspirants at the party''s delegates congress held at the Busunya Secondary School in the Nkoranza North Constituency.
The Nkoranza District Directorate of the Electoral Commission (EC) conducted the election. The other aspirants who filed their nominations and contested the primaries were Prince Ofosu Adjei, 37, General Manager, Internal Audit of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR); Mr Peter Osei Ofosu, 42, an Assistant Registrar of the University of Ghana, and Mr Edmund Baffoe, a tutor at the Nkoranza Secondary Technical School.
Major Oduro, who is also a citizen of Busunya in his address, thanked the delegates’ for the confidence reposed in him by electing him to contest the by-election on the party’s ticket. He pledged to team up with the other aspirants in his campaign to retain the seat for the party. Major Oduro said based on his contributions as a citizen of the area towards the development of the constituency and the achievements of the NPP government, the constituency would fall to the party.
He called on supporters of the party not to be complacent but to intensify their house-to-house campaign to enable the party to win with a wider margin.The National Chairman of the NPP, Mr Mac Manu, said the party was poised to retain the seat and this time around they were going to win by a wider margin.
He said the party was not going to rest on its laurels but would intensify its campaign to win the Nkoranza North Constituency by-election as it did at the recently held Fomena by-election.Mr Manu said the party had been on the ground in terms of structures and organisation from the polling station level to the national level and added that the NPP did not wait for an election to come before it informed and mobilised members, but worked all year round.
