Ghanaian Women Celebrate Int’l Women Day 3/8/2007
Women in Ghana today have celebrated International Women Day with photo exhibition of first Women Achievers in the country. The photo exhibition by the department of Women under the Women Ministry featured women who have reached great high of achievement in their area of specialty or women who have made outstanding contribution to the socio-economic development of the country,

...some of them being Gifty Afenyi Dadzie, first Woman president of the Ghana Journalist Association, Joyce Rosalind Aryee, first woman to head the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Mrs. Theresa Kufuor, first lady of the fourth Republic, Hon. Susanna Al-Hassan, one of the first women Members of Parliament in the First Republic of Ghana, Yaa Asantewaa, Queenmother of Ejisu, the first queen mother to lead a kingdom to defend itself, Ama Ataa Aidoo, a gem in African literature, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, ex-first lady of Ghana, Prof. Mariam Ewurama Addy, the first woman Professor of Science of the University of Ghana and many others.



Minister for Women and Children Affairs, Hajia Alima Mahama who opened the photo exhibition said the purpose of celebrating the International Women Day is to take account of women contribution towards the nation building in terms of achievement. She also pointed out that the day offers opportunity to consider where much effort needs to be harnessed to promote the advancement of women in the country.



Hon. Mahama emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan of action in place for proper implementation and effectiveness of the Domestic Violence law which was passed by Parliament recently. She commended Ghanaian women for their immense contribution to the socio-economic development of the country over the last 50 years.
