Barely a fortnight after the discovery of a quantity of substances suspected to be narcotics in the terminal building of the Kotoka International Airport, another quantity of the suspected illegal drug has been found. The continued search of the terminal building by the security task force of the Ghana Airport Company, on Wednesday resulted in the discovery of more of packages of the suspected substance, weighing 38.3 kilograms.
With the first discovery said to be 31.7kilogrammes, the total haul now stands at 70 kilogrammes. A reliable security source at the airport has hinted the Times that the security outfit of the GAC has intensified its investigations to unravel the circumstances under which the packages found their way into the terminal building. Last Friday, the Times newspaper reported the arrest of one security office of the Ghana Airports Company (GAC) and three others by the Narcotics Control Board (NCB) over the discovery of a quantity of a substance suspected to be a narcotic in the terminal building of the Kotoko airport.
Owusu Yelbert, said to be a top security person, and three employees of the Airport Duty Free Shop were those arrested while two other security personnel are on the run. Security sources at the airport said following an intelligence received by the GAC, that a quantity of the illicit drug had been taken into the terminal building to be exported, caused the airport to be cordoned off so as to keep an eye on all critical areas to ensure that the packages were located.
A search by the security personnel on the entire terminal building led to the discovery of some packages hidden in a room within the terminal building. The packages were kept under close surveillance and the six who were identified as those who could have possibly been involved in placing them there, were invited for questioning. Meanwhile, the management of the Ghana Airport Company has set a five-member committee of enquiry to investigate how the packages got into the building.
