The Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) today held a special press briefing on the Electrical Energy situation in Ghana in Accra. The statement was read by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of VRA, Mr. Joshua Ofeidie. He said government has provided funding and VRA are working closely with the Ministries of Energy and finance to procure and install about 136 mega watts of emergency power plants, to address the current energy.
He said the first 50 mega watts has been installed at Tema and is being tested prior to commencement of commercial operations by the end of this month. Mr. Ofeidie said the remaining 86 megawatts would be brought into service by end of April. The CEO of VRA said that a consortium of mining companies is also working with VRA to develop an 80 megawatts thermal plant in Tema which is due to be commissioned in August 2007.
Additionally, VRA with support from the Government is building a 126 megawatts (MW) crude oil fired thermal plant also in Tema due to be completed by the end of August 2007. Furthermore, he said, following the commissioning of transmission line between Nigerian and Benin, Benin is now able to receive part of their energy supply from Nigeria. This, he said has enabled VRA to reduce supply to Togo/Benin to 25MW and retain some 75MV of supply which would otherwise have been demanded by these countries. He said with the Volta Lake level today at 237.60ft, if more rains do not come before the end of April, the Akosombo Hydro Station would have to be shut down.
