Mrs. Alima Nuhu, the Brong Ahafo Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, on Tuesday said the Domestic Violence Bill recently passed by parliament was to address short falls in existing domestic laws of the country.
She was addressing women at a one-day forum at Kenyasi in Asutifi District organized by Women Consultative Committee of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL) to deepen women''s knowledge and understanding about the bill.
The forum was part of the international women''s day celebration and was under the theme, "Domestic Violence - the role of women".
Mrs. Nuhu expressed regret that in spite of several educational programmes to help curtail all forms of abuse, women still suffered abuses such as female genital mutilation, rape and assault.
James Badu, the Environmental Manager of NGGL, said the company had joined women in the celebration, recognizing the positive role they play in the society, especially in concession communities.
"The forum is to affirm Newmont''s commitment to its gender strategy and to enable women to express themselves freely in decision making", he added.
