Accra, March 30, GNA - The late Madam Hawa Yakubu was a great woman who served and carried the flag of Ghana high, President John Agyekum Kufuor said in a tribute to her at the Castle, Osu, on Friday. He said the Government and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of which she was the first National Chairman would therefore stand with the bereaved family to give "this high-spirited lady who lived like a meteor, a shooting star" a decent and befitting funeral.
"She seemed to live by destiny and must be seen off with deep feelings and respect," President Kufuor said when a delegation of the family of the deceased called on him to officially announce the death to him.
Among those present were some members of the Council of State, Ministers, Parliamentarians as well as the National and Regional Executive members of the NPP.
Madam Yakubu died in London on March 20, where she was receiving medical treatment.
President Kufuor said he was overcome by sadness and recalled his first contact with her about 30 years ago when they both served in the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Third Republican Constitution. He said although then relatively young at the time, there was no way anybody could miss her presence. 93She was enterprising," the President said.
As Independent Member of Parliament (MP) in 1992, NPP MP in 1996 and Minister in 2001, her performance was sterling and in the NPP she carved a niche for herself, President Kufuor noted.
Earlier, Mr C.K. Tedam, a Member of the Council of State, Mr Kwamina Bartels, Information and National Orientation Minister, and Mrs Gladys Asmah, Minister of Fisheries, took turns to pay glowing tributes to her memory.
Running through these were the acknowledgement of her exceptional courage to speak for the voiceless, philanthropic work and service to the nation.
Mr Tedam said the late Madam Yakubu played a big role in "selling" Ghana.
Ghana has lost a great daughter, declared Mr Bartels, while Mrs Asmah said of her, "She was one of those people whose lives should be emulated."
The spokesman of the bereaved family, Mr Bernard D. Moro, informed President Kufuor that no date has yet been fixed for her funeral and that they were still consulting.
He said they, however, intend to bury her at her hometown, Pusiga.
