| GJA scribe rejects “robbery motive” over Ennin’s killing |

The General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association, Bright Blewu, has asked the police to reach deeper for the real reason for which the Association’s Ashanti Regional Chairman was killed.
The police on Tuesday announced they have arrested two men and they are convinced are responsible for the shooting incident on February 9 this year that snapped away the life of the 42-year-old journalist at a rest spot in Kumasi.
Kwame Ayew, 27, and another 27-year-old Sheriff Kabore were on Tuesday paraded by the police as the two prime suspects for the killing.
The police say they have no reason to look beyond robbery as the sole motive for the killing.
But Mr. Blewu who spoke on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show to express relief that at last the prime suspects have been picked up and therefore commended the police, said the police conclusion is baffling, given that at the time of the shooting, the killers did not rob their victim of anything but simply walked away.
He said Ennin was not alone at the time of the incident, and the fact that the hitmen walked up to him and shot him, and then proceeded to walk away would suggest motives other than simple robbery.
Blewu wondered why anybody would walk up to another, just shoot at him and walk off, and cautioned journalists to be mindful of their immediate surroundings at all times to detect if anybody was tailing them.
He also called for improved security in the country to ensure that journalists and all others have the assurance of safety to go about their duties.
Mr. Blewu said journalism is such that practitioners often come into conflict with the people they write about and it behoved on the journalists to take their security a bit more seriously.
He said elsewhere, journalists have been the targets of attacks and vilifications by people thought to have been exposed or whose toes have been stepped upon, and insisted that it is not enough to leave the motive to police convictions.
