Catholic University opens Satellite Campus 5/16/2007
, May 15, GNA - The Ghana Catholic Bishops'' Conference (GCBC), on Tuesday said the establishment of the Satellite Campus of the Catholic University College in Accra, would offer pre-university and other courses offered by the mother University at Fiapre in the Brong Ahafo Region.

It is the expectation of the GCBC that the Satellite Campus will benefit the Fiapre Campus financially and in other ways, a statement signed by the President of the GCBC and Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, Most Reverend Lucas Abadamloora, said.

It thanked Ivan Cardinal Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelism of Peoples, for his interest and support in the pastoral ministry and for accepting to lay the stone for the Administrative Block of the main University College campus.

The statement noted that in accordance with the age-old catholic tradition of promoting Christian integral, holistic and excellent education for humanity, the Catholic hierarchy of Ghana in 1994 decided to establish a tertiary educational institution.

The GCBC set up an academic and administrative committee to plan a Catholic University and after four years, the committee submitted its report, which detailed the course to be taken at the initial stage. The Committee recommended the establishment of a main campus in one of the nine regions and provide the rest with satellite campuses when the need arise.

The statement noted that although land was available in all the regions, the GCBC followed the Committee''s proposal and chose Brong Ahafo Region as the location for the University.

This was after the Bishop of Sunyani had informed them of the offer of land by the Chief of Fiapre.

The Catholic University, the statement said, remained an exclusive property of the GCBC in which the Catholic Church was deeply committed. "This was why we invited no other person than President John Agyekum Kufuor to honour the GCBC with performing the sod-cutting ceremony of the Administrative Block."Source:
