Accra, July 23, GNA - Nana Obiri Boahen, a presidential nominee for the position of Minister of State at the Ministry of the Interior, on Monday debunked allegations of being a "hothead" and told the Parliamentary Vetting Committee that he would be more cautious about his conduct.
Comparing himself to St Paul, Nana Obiri Boahen asserted himself as competent for the position, adding he would exhibit traits of a more mature person in a position as Minister of State.
"Like St Paul in the Bible I must say that when I was a child I behaved like a child but now that I am older I will behave like an older person," the nominee told the Committee, attracting giggles and cheers from the audience.
The nominee, a lawyer, who appeared excited, said he had never been arraigned before a court for assault and that an allegation to that effect was false in respect to a client he was helping to reclaim a debt.
On the question of a possible combination of his current position as the Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ministerial position, Nana Obiri Boahen said neither the NPP Constitution nor the state Constitution debarred person from holding the two positions.
He, however promised to relinquish his position of the regional NPP chairman if his nomination gets the approval, citing the exacting demands of both positions.
The nominee answered questions on armed robbery, the drug menace, "contract killings" and promised to liase with security agencies and other state bodies to deal with those national concerns.
Nana Obiri Boahen agreed that there were short-comings in the narcotics law which was based on a UN Convention of 1961, pointing out that "we should put our heads together to bring out a comprehensive law on narcotics," and implement it to the letter.
The nominee disagreed with a suggestion that he might use his background as a lawyer and his new position to antagonize other people who did not belong to the NPP, explaining that he had had clients who belonged to other political parties including the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and also the Convention People''s Party (CPP).Source: GNA
