President John Agyekum Kufuor has directed the security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the shooting of a 26-year-old man to death by operatives of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).
The report of the investigations is to be forwarded to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Joe Ghartey, for advise.
The Minister of National Security, Mr. Francis Poku, announced this yesterday when he visited the bereaved family to console them. The deceased, Gibril Sumaila, was gunned down in an operation by operatives of the BNI last Sunday when they were looking for a car snatcher who was alleged to have snatched a National Security Car.
Mr. Poku said the visit was not to offer excuse for the incident but to share in their grief. He said personnel of the security agencies were there to protect the people and were not above the law. He said he would take personal interest in the investigations to ensure that they were promptly conducted and the culprits brought to book.
Mr. Poku said President Kufuor had special interest in the people of the area and would therefore not want to do anything to make the relationship frosty.
He urged anyone in the area who had information about the incident to feel free to contact him personally or the investigators. A board member of the Legal Resources Centre, a community rights non-governmental organization, who accompanied the Minister and the Nima Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent A. Awuni, reassured the family that Mr. Poku had never reneged on his word to ensure justice and peace. He therefore urged them to cooperate with the investigators. The head of the Dagomba Community in the area, Chief Abdul Kadir Tahiru, said the visit of the Minister had assuaged their pains.
