| Bagbin commends minority parties |

Kumasi, Sept. 12, GNA - Mr. Alban Bagbin, Minority Leader in Parliament, has attributed Ghana''s successful adherence to the principles of constitutional rule under the Fourth Republic to viable opposition from minority parties over the years.
He commended as "meaningful", the role played by minority parties since 1992 through debates, consensus building and alternative suggestions to government policies and initiatives. Speaking at a Parliamentary public forum in Kumasi on Tuesday, Mr Bagbin stated that minority parties had contributed immensely to keeping the ruling government on its toes and compelling it to uphold the rule of law.
The event was sponsored by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, a German Non-Governmental Organization and organised to provide the public an insight into the work of Parliament and the role of Members of Parliament (MP''s) in a multi-party democracy. A cross-section of residents in the Ashanti region participated in the forum, which was attended by the entire leadership of Parliament and MPs.
Mr Bagbin emphasised the need for the leadership and supporters of political parties to be committed to the tenets of democracy and that they should avoid intra-party animosity, antagonism and disrespect for divergent views.
Mr Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi-Hughes, Speaker of Parliament, said it was about time that Ghanaians re-dedicated themselves to strengthening the democratic system and structures for the promotion of multi-participatory and party governance.
He called for the creation of an enabling environment to allow for good working conditions for MPs to enable them discharge their duties effectively.
Nana Adusei Poku, Akyempemhene, said it was imperative that Parliament should engage in occasional discussions and dialogue with the citizenry on the constitution and the responsibilities of MPs.
