Kumasi, Sept. 23, GNA- Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, an aspiring Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appealed to the constituency delegates who would be selecting the flagbearer of the party for Election 2008, not to abuse the power invested in them.
He said it behoved them to elect a candidate who had the political leadership qualities and was prepared to lead the party and the country in peace and unity, since they would be doing the political marketing of the candidate for the crucial 2008 General Election.
Addressing 10 constituency party executives, polling station chairmen and supporters, at a meeting to ask for their votes at the Centre for National Culture in Kumasi, at the weekend, Nana Akufo-Addo said there was the need for them to work hard and not to be influenced by money in order to elect somebody like him who possesses all the political and leadership functions to lead the party to victory.
He emphasised that as a former Foreign Minister and Attorney General, he has the experience and is ready for the leadership of the country.
He said there was the need for them to work hard to bring victory to the party and to be able to do this would depend on the message of the party to the electorate, quality of the leader they elect and effective organisational work to be embarked upon.
Nana Akufo-Addo said out of the 39 constituencies in the Ashanti Region, the party already had 36 of them and there was the need to woo the remaining three to its fold, while the 74 per cent of the votes obtained in the 2004 General Election should also be increased. He said President John Agyekum Kufuor had built a solid foundation for the party and the nation and " we have parliamentary majority and the people are also solidly behind us".
Touching on negative comments people have been saying about him and the NPP, regarding to the number of people fighting for the presidential slot, he said it was in line with the tradition of the party to allow one them to lead them through democratic means.
On public comments about him, that he is proud and arrogant, he said, "I''m not proud I''m just a simple small man. I love people and what I don''t like is injustice. I have fought this all in my life and if this is what people see and comment anyhow, I like it so".
He said the Party needed somebody who could do the work and said words and comments that could bring division, hatred, enmity as well as ethnic and religious tensions should be avoided in the party''s efforts to elect a leader to continue to lead the nation.
He noted that there is the need for the party to have somebody who has been loyal to the party for the past years, a person imbued with the spirit of unity and would use party policies and ideas blended with the courage to lead the people and lead them well.
