Takoradi, Nov. 1, GNA - Dr Tony Aubynn, Head of Corporate Affairs and Social Services of Goldfields Ghana Limited, on Wednesday said the community relations policy of the company was based on sustainable development in health, education, water and sanitation and infrastructure.
He was interacting with the press at Takoradi after presenting two computers, two printers and 21-inch television set to the press centre of the Western Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). Dr Aubynn said over 300 students are benefiting from the company''s scholarship scheme and are pursuing courses in tertiary institutions, vocational and senior high schools. The company has built over 30 classrooms units in its catchments area and provided learning materials and furniture to the schools. Dr Aubynn said the company would continue to carry out intensive gold exploration, develop them into real mines, acquire quality assets and ensure mine efficiency.
He said the company was undertaking a study to ascertain whether it would be viable to undertake underground mining at its Damang mine. Mr Stephen Yirenkyi, a Community and Public Relations Manager of Goldfields, said many factors would be taken into consideration before the company starts underground mining. He said the price of gold had gone up on the world market but the prices of equipment had also increased.
Mr Yirenkyi said underground mining could be undertaken with new technology that would not require construction of shafts. 01 Nov 07Source:
