A special Muslim prayer on the theme: “Holding On Fast To The Rope Of Allah As One People” was today held at the Central Mosque in Accra. The purpose was to give thanks to God for peaceful and successful elections. Addressing the gathering, the President, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, called for unity among citizenry, saying a unified factor was what is needed to move the country forward “since we are all children of God irrespective of one’s religious background”. The President said, real work has now begun, and the onus is to ensure development of the deprived areas, which is the top agenda of the government. In doing this, President Mills said, “they will be doing what is right, fair and pursuing the tenets of equality”. According to the President, peace was very crucial because without peace, there would not be any meaningful development, adding that Ghana did not have room for violence of any nature. But what is important is how to ensure that government creates equal opportunity for all Ghanaians. On the election, President Mills observe that Ghana has cemented its democratic credential and has not only become the envy in the whole of Africa, but the world as well. The President commended religious bodies, civil society, security services, the media and all who contributed in ensuring peaceful and successful elections. He therefore called for a constant thanksgiving and reminded the public to continue to pray for the nation to become greater and stronger. In his welcome address, Alhaji Gado Mohammed, Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, said it is now time to focus on the challenges facing the country since the elections were over. He said Ghanaians must show maturity, compassion and must have trust in the government. Alhaji Gado Mohammed said government needed proper planning and focus so they could work up to expectation for the benefit of all Ghanaians. Alhaji Hudu Yahaya, first National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), observed that illiteracy was high in Islam communities and asked the people take advantage of the government’s affordable education programme. Present at the ceremony were the National Chief Imam, Sheik Nuhu Sharubutu, Members of Parliament, party executives among others.
