The divisional workers union Chairman of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Louis Darko says the Corporation’s earnings and output has shot up within the past two years of the term of office of the current Director-General, William Ampem Darko. This, he says, is due to the managerial skills and discipline introduced by the Director-General. Mr. Darko was speaking at a durbar in Accra by Union Workers of the Corporation. He reiterated the need for GBC to stay balanced and neutral to help promote peace and development.
The durbar also discussed the current saga over GTV’s breakfast show, following the programme’s abrupt end during its live telecast. He explained that the panel on the show was not truly representative of the major parties and that invited the Director-General’s intervention. He however, called for the exercise of restraint by some journalists and the general public on their reactions to the Director-General.
According to Mr. Darko the Director-General was appointed by the National Media Commission on merit. There is therefore no need for Mr. Ampem-Darko to please any political party to keep his job. He noted that Mr. Ampem-Darko is human and so can make mistakes.
Nevertheless, the union welcomes the public’s criticisms and comments and believes this will help GBC to attain higher goals.
