Ghana: Ethnic Hatred In The Offing?
Democracy was supposed to bring peace, unity and order to every nation that believes in it. But currently in Ghana, democracy is posing a dangerous situation of tribalism after the 2009 transition of power through a democratic form of elections. There is currently a serious tribal quarrel between three of ten great regions in Ghana:- the Greater, Western and Ashanti Regions. This tribal conflict has come about as a result of the controversy surrounding the office premises for ex-President Kufuor which is on Ga land in Accra, as part of his end of service benefits.
The Ga Dangbe youth and the Osu Traditional Council of Accra began the conflict when they warned ex-president Kufuor not to attempt using the office premises on their Osu land, which was supposed to be part of his end-of-service-benefit, or else they would make life uncomfortable for him. In reaction to the Ga people’s behaviour towards the ex-president, some people of the Western region, which sympathized with ex-president Kufuor, also threatened the Ga people that they would use all available means to protect the regions heritage and resources for generations yet unborn. The Western Region is blessed with natural resources and lands fertile for plant growth much better than that of Greater Accra region.
They have therefore warned that if the current government does not intervene, they would cut off business activities with the greater Accra region, i.e. the Ga people. They further expressed their willingness to drive away the Ga people in the Western region if they do not stop their threats towards the ex-president. The most dangerous part of it is that this tribal conflict is threatening to affect a football game which unifies the whole country. The Ashanti youth is willing to disturb the Black Stars match against Benin which will be played in Kumasi, Ashanti as part of the 2010 world cup qualifiers, in reaction to the Ga people’s behavior.
In an interview with peacefmonline, the leader of the Ashanti Region youth, Samuel Akwasi, popularly known as Sammy Tugah, said they are mobilizing themselves to boycott the match between the Ghana Black Stars and their Benin counterparts on Sunday, March 29, 2009 if the Ga people do not apologise to the ex-president Kufuor. Is there ethnic hatred in the offing?
