UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has said that he’s co-operating fully with the Volcker Commission, which is investigating the Iraqi Oil-for-Food programme.
A new memo has cast doubt on Mr. Annan’s insistence that he was unaware of a bid by a Swiss firm that employed his son for a lucrative contract under oil-for-food program.
Speaking with reporters, Mr. Annan said there’s no possibility that he would resign.
“Mr Volcker and his group are looking into this and get into the bottom of the allegation. I don’t want to be drawn on this,” he said.
Mr Annan asked journalists to allow the Volcker Commission to do its work.
“ I will also plead with you to resist the temptation of substituting the yourself to the Volcker Commission, please let him do his work,” he said.
When asked again if he would consider resigning if it was found out that he did was withholding information, Mr Annan said, “ That is speculative, I have given them all that I know.”
Asked if he was encouraging his son Kojo Annan to cooperate with the commission, he replied, “ I have always urged Kojo to cooperate with the Volcker Commission and that still remains my position.”
