All laws regulating the practice of all professions in the health sector are under review while new ones will be introduced to cover areas that have not yet been regulated. Dr. Kofi Adadey, Chairman of the Medical and Dental Council, disclosed these in Accra, yesterday, at the first ever induction of Physician Assistants in Ghana. Dr. Adadey advised the inductees, 615 in all, to treat patients with dignity and respect, exhibit the highest standards of behaviour, be patient and listen to patients and be honest and open to them. The Registrar of the Council, Dr. E.K. Atikpui, congratulated the Physician Assistants for having contributed other quota to healthcare delivery in Ghana, especially in the remote and deprived areas. Dr. Atikpui reminded them of the shared value of the Medical and Dental Council which is “Guiding the Profession, Protecting the Public”. Qualification as a Physician Assistant requires knowledge of ethics, law and medical jurisprudence, while the mandate and functions of the Medical and Dental Council assures the public that a Physician Assistant whose name appears on any register of the Council has met the appropriate training standards for medical/dental practice in Ghana.
