The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) would from October, this year, introduce breathalysers at all lorry parks to check the alcohol levels of drivers. Additionally, the union has ordered for reflectors which every driver must acquire. These measures are being introduced to reduce the high rate of vehicular accidents and indiscipline on the country''s roads. The National Chairman of the GPRTU, Alhaji Yaw Manu, made this known at the seventh Upper West Regional Delegates Conference of the union in Wa which elected new regional executive members to run the affairs of the union for the next four years. Alhaji Manu said accident rates on the roads were alarming, a development which compelled the union to embark on a number of measures to arrest the situation. He said any driver loading at a particular lorry station would be made to undergo the exercise, failure of which would attract sanctions. Alhaji Manu said the union had also engaged selected organisations to train and educate its members on road safety and, therefore, asked those to benefit to take the exercise very seriously. “The blame is always put at the doorsteps of the GPRTU when accidents occur so we are seriously playing our part so the government must also do same so that jointly we can fight the situation,” he said. Alhaji Manu said although people of the Upper West Region, particularly drivers, were predominantly Muslims who do not drink alcohol, they should participate in the exercise, since it was going to be nationwide. On armed robbery, the GPRTU National Chairman called for the involvement of all Ghanaians in the fight against the menace. “They don’t stay in the bush. They are with us in the cities and towns so let us expose them to the authorities,” he advised. He urgedd members of the union to actively participate in its activities particularly the forthcoming national delegates conference scheduled for Tamale in the Northern Region.
