Blood tutor remanded 6/23/2005
An Accra circuit court has remanded the teacher who allegedly forced pupils to lick his blood.

He is to appear before the court on the 28th of this month.

Yao Yikoubou, a French teacher at the Mother Mary’s School in Accra, reportedly forced pupils to lick his blood to prove their innocence in a theft case.

The money belonged to one of the teachers of the Mother Mary’s preparatory school in
Accra.

The teacher has since been tested for HIV/AIDS.

Details of the test results are yet to be disclosed.

The Ghana Education Service had earlier directed that the teacher be dismissed.

Explaining the GES directive to Joy News acting director general of the Service Michael Nsowah says the issue borders on criminality.

He told Joy News that the head master, J.N Wussah who is now on police bail must also be sanctioned for not acting to protect the students.

“ We actually said the teacher who cut himself be sacked as well as handed over to the police because it bordered on criminal offence. The head teacher should also be sanctioned for negligence…” he said.

The teacher in question, who is a Togolese national, has had no formal training in the profession.

And Mr. Nsowah is not happy with the way people with all sorts of background are given teaching appointments especially in private schools.

He explains that it is the responsibility of the head teachers of private schools to ensure that only qualified personnel are appointed to teach in their schools.

“ A lot of people are coming into the system to teach French and they are holding all sorts of certificates. And so we are appealing to private schools that if they have any doubts about the authenticity of such people they can rely on us…” he said.
