Officers and men of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) have been asked to resolve to work selflessly to ensure excellence in migration management that would propel the nation’s developmental agenda.Dr Peter Alex Wiredu, Director of GIS noted that the two key elements that some officers and men are lacking in their work attitudes and ethics are commitment and dedication. Speaking at the end of year get-together in Accra yesterday, Dr Wiredu told the personnel that “no sacrifice should be considered too much in the service of the country of our birth". He said some officers and men only appear to be interested in the prestige attached to the positions they occupy and not the responsibility that goes with such appointments. “As we enter the New Year, let us resolve to work extra hard in our selfless service to mother Ghana and be vigilant in our operations,” he said. Dr Wiredu, tasked the officers to endeavour to live by the service’s new vision which is: “Delivering excellence in migration management for national development.” He said the service would be extra vigilant in the fight against illegal immigrants and documentation fraud. Dr Wiredu therefore entreated the public not to hesitate to report suspicious characters and foreigners who do not have relevant documents covering their stay. He commended efforts of officers who worked tirelessly despite the daunting challenges facing the service adding: “We are optimistic that government could assist us with more logistics to address these problems.” Inadequate personnel, lack of vehicles, issues of Fulani herdsmen are some of the challenges confronting the GIS. On service conditions, Dr Wiredu said management is working assiduously to ensure that it is submitted to Parliament for approval soon. Dr Wiredu later presented monies and refrigerators to six retirees of the service. Dr Seth Otuteye, Chairman of GIS Board, urged the personnel to be punctual and responsible in their operations to raise the stature of the service. He advised them to establish standards in their human relations, which formed the basis of collective work. Dr Otuteye told the personnel to continue to lend support in line with the vision set out by the service. Source: GNA
