| Parliament Passes Presidential Transition Bill |

The Parliament of Ghana has passed the Presidential Transition Bill into law.
The new law was initiated by the Institute of Economic Affair and the Ghana Political Parties Programme, an interparty consultative group involving the four political parties with representation in Parliament (National Democratic Congress (NDC), New Patriotic Party (NPP), People''s National Convention (PNC) and Convention People''s Party (CPP).)
The new law is expected to curtail conflicts related to handing over power from one political party to another. It was unanimous endorsed by both sides of the House on Friday 16 March 20012.
The new law is intended to smoothen the transfer of political power from one administration to the other and improve the process associated with the country''s multiparty democratic governance system. It proposes the establishment of a Presidential Estate Unit which will be headed by an Administrator-General to supervise the transition process.
The legislation seeks to establish an arrangement of political transfer of reins of government from one administration to another in a manner which does not introduce needless strains and help forge national reconciliation, lower the political tension and promote inter-political co-operation while encouraging accountability and good governance.
Clause 1 of the new law provides for the appointment of a Transitional team made up of representation in equal numbers of the incumbent president and of the persons elected as president with the heads of certain public establishments.
The functions of the Team have been designed to cover the arrangements for the transfer as well as handling over of all official assets and properties.
