The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has released the results of the 2010 Population and Housing Census, putting the figures at 24,658,823, an increase of 30.4 per cent from 18,912,079 in 2000.
According to Dr. Philomena Nyarko, Acting Director of the GSS, who announced the results of the census at a news conference in Accra, yesterday, the figures comprised 12,633,978 females, constituting 51.2 per cent and 12,024,845 males, constituting 48.8 percent. Dr. Nyarko said the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions had the greater share of the population with 16.3 per cent for Greater Accra and 19.4 per cent for the Ashanti, with the Western region placing third and Upper West region with the least population.
The final census results, she said, were presented for the 10 administrative regions and 170 districts that existed at the time of the census.
Dr. Nyarko said on-line registration was used to obtain the list of potential enumerators, the first such exercise in the history of Ghana while the enumeration was monitored by well-trained staff from the United Nations and the GSS itself.
She said in discharging this national exercise, the GSS faced many challenges including the shortage of census questionnaires at the enumeration stage, lack of access to communities in flooded areas, where enumeration could not be carried out within the official enumeration period.
Dr. Bernard Coquelin, who spoke on behalf of the Development Partners (DPs), lauded the GSS and the Government of Ghana for successfully completing a herculean task.
Dr. Coquelin acknowledged the contributions of the United Nations Fund For Population Activities (UNFPA), British Department for International Development (DfID) and the European Union (EU) under the Multi-Donor Trust Fund managed by the World Bank, Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for contributing greatly to the census programe.
He announced that the DPs had pledged about six million US dollars to support the GSS to publish statistical tables at the national, regional and district levels.
In addition, he said, the DPs, had committed themselves to funding most of the post-census activities in data analysis, production of monograph and thematic report as well as their dissemination.
