| GMA regrets politicization of inquest call into Mills’ death |

The Ghana Medical Association has expressed regrets over what it says is the politicization of a call for an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of President John Mills.
The National Executive Council of the Association in a press statement issued shortly after an emergency council meeting said their call for the circumstances surrounding Prof Mills'' death was without malice and genuinely intended.
President of the Association in the Ashanti Region, Dr Kwabena Opoku-Adusei in expressing his condolences to President John Mahama said presidential inquest into the death of the president Mills is needed to fashion out a comprehensive plan to cater for emergency health needs for future presidents.
His call however attracted a number of criticisms, with the Deputy Sports Minister Dr Omane Boamah writing a letter to the late president and accusing GMA of being hypocritical and politically tainted.
A member of the GMA in a reaction also wrote a letter letter to the late president attacking Dr Omane Boamah.
After the series of letter writing attacks, the GMA has intervened.
‘The National Executive Council of the GMA has noted with deep concern and regret that the matter has taken a partisan political twist with the association’s original genuine intentions being totally misconstrued.’
The statement further said that the GMA in meeting President John Mahama shortly after the death of Prof Mills ‘appealed to government to put in place a health care plan for government officials in particular and improved emergency systems for the general populace. The focus of the GMA is to learn from the circumstances of the death to inform broader national health policy and systems.’
The statement further said ‘the GMA leadership wishes to reiterate to its members and the general public who may have felt affronted by the general tone of the media brouhaha earlier this week that leadersip had no intention to offend their sensibilities and to assure them of our continued willingness to stay the course of a professional body.’
