| Government To Increase Power Generation Capacity By 2016 |

The Government of Ghana is to increase power generation capacity to 5,000 megawatts under the power sub-sector by 2016, the Minister for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has disclosed.
The Energy Minister said 80% of the thermal power, the generation of which is the gas-based, would be achieved by 2015 and that the Energy sector was set to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 10% in the electricity generation mix by 2020
Outlining further the programmes envisaged by the ministry, he noted that a non-congested transmission system was to be developed by 2015 while distribution infrastructure would be improved and modernised for efficient service delivery and the reduction of system losses.
Hon. Buah was speaking at his turn of the Meet-The-Press encounter in Accra last Thursday.
Touching on formulated strategies to achieve the 5000 MW target, Hon. Buah emphasised that his sector was set to providing short to medium term annual generation road maps with specific planned projects, working to ensure that the Volta River Authority (VRA) effectively delivered on its mandate of ensuring generation sufficiency and reliability, by pursuing various renewable projects particularly solar, mini hydro, biomass and wind to augment generation as well as leveraging funding for planned projects and ensuring that planned projects were completed on time.
The Energy Minister said an additional total of 267MW was to be expected from the contributions of 132MW from the Takoradi 3 thermal plant, 133MW from one unit of Bui and 2MW solar plant in Navrongo respectively to augment the current generation capacity of the VRA.
Addressing the issue of rural electrification projects under the “Energy for All “programme, Hon. Buah reiterated that the Ministry had continued to pursue the government’s flagship programme, the National Electrification Scheme (NEG) which focused on extending electricity to towns and rural communities through the national electrification scheme.
