Punish lazy civil servants - Osu Mantse tells gov’t 7/27/2014

Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, Paramount Chief and President of the Osu Traditional Council, has urged government to fire civil servants who are not performing to expectation.

He said before such a move the policy of engagements and tasks should be looked at so that civil servants who could not meet targets set for them are sanctioned.

Nii Kinka Dowuona, who gave the advice in an interview with Ghana News Agency on Thursday at his palace at Osu in Accra, said the ministries have become a dumping ground for un-skilled and lazy workers.

He said some government workers use productive hours to run their personal businesses, and thus leave the bulk of the job on their dedicated colleagues. He said there are a lot of wastes in the civil and public services, such as absenteeism and lateness to work, hence the need for government to take bold steps in addressing them.

Nii Kinka Dowuona said: “Ghanaians need to change their attitude and be patriotic. We should always think of what we can do for our country first rather than what the country can do for us.”

He noted that the country’s universities have become academic-based rather than technological oriented, to churn out students who could bring practical solutions to some of the nation’s problems.

Nii Kinka Dowuona said in order for the country to deal with the mounting sanitation problem the authorities should recycle waste to generate electricity as well as the production of fertilizer.
