Goons Scatter NPP Congress A Constituency Chairman escaped lynching my inches, a police officer was turned into a punching bag with blood gushing out of his lips, party gurus took to their heels and sought refuge in hotel rooms when hired goons allegedly hired by high ranking government and party officers stormed a constituency congress and scattered the event. The last time a political violence erupted in the Krowor Constituency, the then Constituency Chairman was beaten to the point of death and a pick-up belonging to the then Member of Parliament – Emmanuel Adjei Boye, who as also Deputy Minister of Road and Transport was used to dump his almost lifeless body in the bush. In order to avoid the same predicament of his predecessor, the new constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Robert Missinah was seen running on top speed inside the premises of Alton Hotel in Nungua, suburb of Accra.
The goons numbering about 10 stormed the venue of the congress and turned chairs and tables arranged for the ceremony upside down. When the policemen present approached the thugs to bring peace to the chaotic situation, one of the heavily built thugs hit and punched him, injuring him in the process. The Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Abraham Odai went to the aid of the bleeding police officer and rushed him to the hospital for treatment. The attack sparked speculations among the party’s officers that the thugs were hired by certain individuals within the party to cause the commotion. The constituency chairman, Mr. Bissimah Robert categorically told the Enquirer that the former MP with the support of the Greater Accra Regional Executives including the regional chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, who is also the Minister of Tourism and Modernisation of the Capital City are working hard towards the former MPs a comeback.
Mr. Bissinah told the Enquirer that Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey’s team is responsible for all the confusions that the NPP is embroiled in the Greater Accra Region. He accused the Tourism minister of plotting to plant his cronies at top level of the party in the Krowor Constituency, so that they can stage-manage the second coming of Mr. Adjei-Boye as the NPP Parliamentary candidate for the next general election in 2008. But the Enquirer has not found any evidence which connects the former MP and the Regional Chairman to any confusion within the party. Attempt to contact both Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey and Mr. Emmanuel Adjei-Boye failed by press time.
The police officers did all they could to bring sanity to the venue for the congress to proceed but their effort went unheeded to by some of the constituency executives. The constituency chairman openly insulted the party’s regional organiser, Mr. Albert Afaglo, and described him as being useless and ineffective. Mr. Afaglo also described Mr. Bissinah as a hopeless and a major liability to the NPP.
