Malaika, The Thrilling Pageant That Was If the Miss Malaika title was for the fastest contestant, Lina Smith, who came third in last Saturday’s Miss Malaika 2005 would have won the race.
When the MC announced Lina as the second runner up, the excited girl stepped onto the glittering stage, collected her beautiful bouquet of flowers, and made a bee line for the queen’s throne.
Of course she had to be told that hers was the second runner-up position and that the throne was reserved for another contestant.
Patricia Akuamoah who was crowned queen turned out as the most courageous, beautiful, intelligent and above all, “knew what she wanted in life, how to get it, and when to get it.”
That was how the new Miss Malaika 2005 — Patricia, described herself for the last time before answering the ultimate question that made her the queen of the night.
At the Accra International Conference Centre last Saturday where the final phase of this year’s Miss Malaika beauty pageant took place, Patricia, was at her very best and was the pick of most of the audience even before her last appearance on stage.
She is tall, outspoken, beautiful, bold, intelligent and very outstanding.
While among the final three, Patricia’s keen competitor was Linda Debra, the first runner up, at a point in time, one could tell that the audience had fallen in love with the performances of these two delegates.
Apart from winning the Miss Talent Award with her splendid and quite seductive dance, Linda in previous episodes of the Miss Malaika TV show, had also won the hearts of many viewers with her sheer, love for fun and her ability to be as daring as anyone could be.
She won the second Best Cook during a cooking competition organised for the delegates. She also won the Best Designer of beach wear among her colleagues and was also voted Miss Karaoke by the general public.
At the final event last Saturday, Linda as usual, was at her very best again and could have won the title — Miss Malaika 2005, but perhaps for her little deviation in answering the ultimate question.
When asked which of the malaria control measures she would focus on, to curb the threat of malaria in the country, Linda, unexpectedly mentioned that she will focus on all three measures in checking malaria in the country.
When Patricia was called on stage to answer that same question, the applause and cheers from the audience after her final word said it all — Patricia was on her way to being crowned Miss Malaika 2005.
A rather interesting part of the event was when those who had earlier been evicted from the pageant, were invited on stage to help vote for Miss Congeniality.
With the exception of Kabuki who was absent, Wendy Donkoh, Ama Pokuah Boadu, Josephine Dickson, Susan Addaquaye and Shirley Ampomah were all on stage to help with this decision. Miss Congeniality went to Lorraine Boateng.
The number of delegates was reduced to five, after they had all given their messages to the audience. And the five who came through after their individual speeches were Linda Debrah, Esther Quaofio, Lina Smith, Patricia Akuamoah and Frances Marie Oduro.
At the end of it all, Patricia was crowned Miss Malaika 2005, while Linda placed second and Lina, third.
As Miss Malaika 2005, Patricia rode away a brand new KIA saloon car in addition to ¢20 million cash, a laptop computer, a 29 inch Panasonic TV and a Home Theatre.
She will also receive a return ticket to Miss Malaika International, a Miss Malaika crown and gold signet jewellery set, an air ticket to the UK, a personal wardrobe, beauty treatments from 2nd Image and cosmetics.
The new queen will also work as an Ambassador against Malaria with the National Malaria Control Programme.
The Miss Malaika night was made a very thrilling one by the performances of VIP, Batman, Ofori Amponsah, Mzbel, Faze from Nigeria and the very hilarious Nigerian comedian, Basket Mouth.
