Osibisa To Rock Ghana Again
In May 1999 when Osibisa last performed in Ghana, the concert was dubbed ‘The Final Home Coming Show’ meaning it was the last time they were performing together as a group.
They said the concert marked the beginning of their lives away from stage lights and tedious tour schedules. But it seems they could not stick to their guns.
They have back-peddled on their word and they are scheduled to perform live next Friday in the nation’s capital.
Osibisa will join other music greats such as C.K.Mann and Ramblers Band at Citi FM’s Music of Ghanaian Origin(MUGO) concert billed for the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, December 2.
Speaking to Mac Tontoh,a member of the group, he said they had to swallow their words because the demand to see them perform has been great.
“This show is by popular request. In this world, one can never say never. This is not to say we didn’t mean it when we said that was our final concert.
You see the demand to see us perform again has been alarming even though we are on ‘retirement’. So when Citi FM contacted us about MUGO, we saw it as a good opportunity to give our teeming fans a treat again.Afterall this is our country and we love you all.
“On Friday,Osibisa will be made up of Teddy Osei, Sol Armarfio, Alfred Bannerman, Greg Brown and myself as well as a few local musicians.
We are happy to come together and as usual we will put up a great show.”Osibisa has been on the move for over 30 years playing to audiences all over the world.
They are loved for their unique hybrid of music mixed with various rhythms laced with some musical idioms from other lands which they christened “criss-cross” rhythms.
According to Mr Samuel Atta-Mensah, Managing Director of Citi FM, MUGO is a celebration of Ghanaian music through the years.
“We want to create a brand of concert which over the years will have its own identity. So we are bringing together both the old and new school.
“Originally, MUGO was to be a two-day affair where we would feature various Ghanaian music forms but that could not happen because of budgetary constraints but we hope that subsequent ones will cut across.”
Other musicians billed to make MUGO an exciting experience are Lord Kenya, Slim Busterr, Okomfo Kwadee, Sidney and Castro among others
