MUSIGA sends New Year message to members
Accra, Dec. 28, GNA - The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has called for co-operation of all stakeholders in the music industry to ensure the realisation of its set objectives in the New Year. In a New Year message signed by Alhaji Sidiku Buari, President of the MUSIGA, the Union warned that it would not countenance any acts of piracy, saying pirates when caught would be made to face the full rigours of the law.
The message said with the promulgation of the Copyright Law, stiffer sentences would be handed down to people caught pirating other people''s intellectual property. The message urged event organisers to consult MUSIGA for technical advice and other services, particularly events involving foreign musicians. "This the Union believes will ensure the smooth presentation of events in Ghana and thereby enhance the image of Ghanaian music and entertainment.
The message advised musicians to abide by the MUSIGA regulations that urge its members not to charge less than 20 per cent of the fees paid to the foreign musicians with whom they play on the same stage. The Union, the message said would not hesitate to employ all means including legal action to ensure that its members who play alongside foreign artistes a fair treatment and the right fees from event organisers. The message said with effect from January 1, next year, the minimum wage payable to its members in category A would be 20 million cedis, category B, 15 million cedis, category C, 10 million cedis, while those in category C would not receive less than five million cedis.
All event organisers should verify the categorisation of the various musicians belonging to the Union at the MUSIGA headquarters, near the Independence Square, Osu, in Accra, the message said. "All musicians and event organisers should make the year 2006 a "live band year", where all shows will be played live," the statement added and wished all members a happy New Year.
