PREPS FOR the Ghana Actors’ Guild premier award event is on-going as Ghanaian movie lovers await the rolling of the red carpet.
The event, which would coincide with Ghana’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebration, would be organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs and the National Commission on Culture.
Our sources say the ministry has taken special interest in the event and is working tirelessly together with the Ghana Actors’ Guild to make the event very successful.
Some of the categories for the Ghana Actors Award include best script of the year, best actor of the year, best supporting actor of the year and discovery of the year.
The event will also give honorary awards to legends of the Ghanaian movie industry, including the late Kofi Yirenkyi, Grace Omaboe, Grace Nortey, Matthew Owusu, and William Addo.
The event is expected to rekindle faith in Ghanaian actors and movies, both home and abroad.
Although the exact date for the event is yet to be confirmed, some actors and movie lovers are anxious to know nominees for the various categories, and how the winners would be chosen.
The Ghanaian movie scene has suffered invasion by Nigerian movies in recent year, and is yet to fully recover from its devastating effect.
The movie industry all over the world is known as a multimillion-dollar industry, and Ghana was once at the forefront of good movie production in Africa.
Ghanaian television stations broadcast more foreign films than they do Ghanaian productions, a situation killing local interest and talent.
As a matter of fact, some Ghanaian producers pay huge sums of money to get their films shown on television.
Perhaps this is the beginning of the end to these challenges, as we gear up for the Ghana Actors Guild Awards this year.
