It''s not every time that we get to see big name designers and international models in Accra so ''Catwalk the World Ghana'' was like the main highlight of the holiday shows and it lived up to it. Hiphop mogul Damon Dash who used to run the Roca-fela empire with Jay-z flew down with his family just be part of the WFP initiative to stop child hunger.
The celebrity list for the show was amazingly extensive and there was an excellent fusion of local and international design talent that made it an exciting showcase. Ozwald Boateng, Kofi Ansah, Alabah Designs, Stone Cherrie (South Africa), Konadu and Deola Sagoe (Nigeria) in one night redefined African fashion with such flexible ease you had to keep pinching yourself to stop gawking.
The charity event was very well attended and the only low moment was when the fund raising auction started and not a single Ghanaian bought anything. Marseille Desailly''s last World cup jersey was put up for grabs starting at $800. Then came Lenoxx Lewis''s boxing gloves, which started bidding at $1500. There were also autographed T-shirts by Damon dash that also went on sale. A group of South African guests decided to double the cash flow after a rather disappointing bidding contest, and Nigerian designer Deola Sagoe''s father bought an item for $5,000. After all the back and forth, the crew from SA came up with $20,000 for what they bought so at least $25,000 wasn''t so much of an embarrassing figure.
The show had some of best models: from Oluchi to Nokia Face of Africa''s Mirash, the South African imports and the Top Model Ghana select side were all very impressive. King Ayisoba out-performed Kojo Antwi to a large extent. For some funny reason the crowd didn''t respond to the Musicman. Damon Dash also made some very ignorant remarks in his brief speech, going on about the fact that he never thought he would see people so well dressed and sophisticated in Africa. Those were some interesting moments. On the whole, the emcees were great. The crowd was rather pretentious but the show itself was excellent and very well put together.
