All set for Black History Celebration |

Ghana’s 50 anniversary celebration has provided a platform for the celebration of heroism, and once and at large, there cannot be any better time to celebrate the history of the Black person than now.
BrassRing Media Network and the Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy in Accra, in association with the Youth Crime Watch of America and Ghana Television (the official Television Station), are organizing Black History Month 2007, beginning February 1st.
The celebration of the Black History month next month coincides with the 50 years of Ghana Independence celebrations and the organizers have prepared the programme to serve as a platform for exhibiting of names and statements made by Black people-who have contributed to the advancement of America, and Ghana.
Some of the major names of people who have been in the forefront of the liberation of the Black People such as, Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah will be the focus during these exhibitions where these personalities documentaries/movies, will be exhibited to audience at the BusyInternet Movie Auditorium – weekdays, Mondays – Thursdays, from 1800hrs GMT.
One of the organizers of the program, The Youth Crime Watch of America International Special Advisor for Africa, Mr. Benjamin Kwame Tawiah who is also a Ghanaian, has disclosed to the Enquirer Vibes in an interview that it is their intention to make the whole Black History Month celebration meaningful, educational and inspiring to the Ghanaian youth, hence they have planned a couple of entertainment shows - where they are looking for talents in the area of art and entertainment, science and engineering.
According to Mr. Tawiah, the youth shall be given the opportunity to be behind the microphone, to sing, rap (Hip Hop Connection Music Show with the theme: Youth Against Crime, Drug and Violence) followed by a Poetry Slam with Local Poets and performance by any of accomplished black American artist of modern-day America at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, every weekend from 10am, excluding Saturday 17th February.
There are 30 confirmed senior secondary schools participating at this year’s Black History Month Competition and over 25 confirmed junior secondary schools, to witness this historic event.
Mr. Tawiah who doubles as the Event coordinator for the Black history month said that BrassRing Media Network and the Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy in association with Ghana Television and the Youth Crime Watch of America are organizing Black History Month 2007.
“We are sponsoring the Black History Month Rap/Hip Hop/R&B/Reggae battle and the Poetry Slam as part of the Black History Month awareness campaign to highlight the issue of Youth involvement in Crime, Drugs and Violence within the communities and schools in Ghana” he emphasized.
According to the programme line-up, the Black History Month 2007 will begin on the Thursday 1st February with a Video/documentary on Maya Angelou and other renowned African American poets at BusyInternet movie Auditorium.
The organizers have allotted two days for inter-schools poetry slam contest: Video of winners will be aired on the official TV station (GTV) as a campaign message on the theme of the Black History Month celebration in Ghana.
The second week has been slated as Civil Right leader’s week and yet Video/documentaries on Civil Right Leaders and other renowned Ghanaian Civil Right Leaders will be shown at Busyinternet movies Auditorium. The week will capture live speeches on Civil Right Leaders of African Americans and from other renowned Ghanaian Civil Right Leaders at the Efua Sutherland Children Park which will be honored by one of America’s renowned Civil Right leader Andre Young, USA
The exhibitions will also cover areas of Science and engineering achievements by showing classic documentaries of some renowned achievers of African Americans physicists, mathematicians, and engineers at Busyinternet movie Auditorium and other inventions by blacks.
The celebration will be rapped-up Black History Month Rap/Hip Hop/R&B/Reggae Battle to highlight the issue of Crime, Drugs and Violence prevention in our communities and schools among the youth.
Those interested will be encouraged to use their creativity to evoke a ''fresh'' and culturally unique angle on these issues in a way that will resonate with our community and school.
One (1) winner will be selected from the pool of competitors and the winning rap student/youth artist will be filmed, for airing on GTV. The winning student/youth artist will also be used for campaigns on youth against crime drugs and violence, around the country.
The contest is open to students, and youth organizations - of all races - in the country.
