Famous Flames Are Champs
Famous Flames, St.Augustine’s old boys’ band, won this year’s Popchain Nostalgia competition held at the El-Wak Stadium last Saturday and became Popchain Nostalgia 2005 champions.

The Famous Flames led by Reggie Sawyerr started their performance by doing their school song St.Augustine’s, Ghana Adanfo Pa followed by Mr. Pitiful, their freestyle song.

In their group was Kojo Dadson of Home Sweet Home fame who excited the audience with his style of singing and dancing. Eventually the band got many people dancing to You Can Get It If You Really Want.

Matthew Chapter 5 of St. John’s School, Sekondi, the defending champions led by Nana Nkrumah and Shasha Marley placed second.

In their group was the GBC’s Director of Radio Yaw Owusu Addo who sang their highlife number Fa W’akoma Ma Me by C.K. Mann.

They opened their performance with a jazz song Going Home by Stanley Jordan which was sang by Shasha Marley followed by their school song Oh When The Saints Go Marching.

Sunday Morning, their freestyle song, by Commodores was rendered by Shasha Marley after which they did a reggae, Get Up, Stand Up by Bob Marley, sang by Shasha. Woyaya by Osibisa was led by Yaw Owusu Addo.

The Kuziuniks of Achimota the only group with both men and women came third. Led by John Addaquaye, they kicked off with From Gambaga to Accra, their school song followed by I Don’t Care, I’m Born to Win and others.

All the bands took away books from Unimax Macmilllan,Tuna from Parry and Co.and a guitar each to be presented to their Alma Mater.

Disco Beavers from Mfantsipim School, led by Danny Ofori Atta who were fourth, received books from Unimax Macmillan and Tuna from Parry and Co.

St. Paul’s School and The Santa Clausians ( Adisadel College) who performed last year were absent.Alhaji Sidiku Buari,Chairman of MUSIGA,George Williams,an actor, as well as Rama Brew,an actress and a singer,were there to grace the occasion.

The programme was preceded by performances from Desmond Ababio and the Alpha Waves Band, which took the audience through memory lane with old songs.

There were also performances by Systematic Funk Mechanics with the MC,Fritz Baffuor and Rama Brew doing jazz songs with them.

Although the programme was good,most people were not happy with the poor attendance.In a chat with Yaw Owusu Addo,he acknowledged the fact that the programme was wonderful but lacked publicity.

Shasha Marley was also excited about the whole show but was not happy with the publicity.

“The show was good, no two ways about that, but the publicity was poor” he said. “Next time the publicity should be big” he added.

Mr.Kwamena Essilfie Adjaye also blamed publicity for the poor attendance. He however hopes that next year the youth will also be targeted as they are the main focus of the programme and prayed that more sponsors will support it.
