| Ghana Elects Azizatu For Miss Africa Pageant |

Twenty-four-year-old national service intern, Azizatu Zakaria has been selected to represent Ghana at this year’s Miss Africa Queen Pan African pageant scheduled for Accra in August.
She beat nine other contestants at a “quiet” show held at the poolside of Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The event came off in a hushed atmosphere, as the organisers strove to observe the ban on drumming and noise-making imposed on the residents of Accra by the Ga traditional authorities as a prelude to the celebration of this year’s Homowo festival of the chiefs and people of the Ga State.
The 10 contestants hit the stage, one after the other, wrapped from chest down, in various colourful ATL cloths perfected by intricate headgears designed by Wendy L’Artisan.
The cloths hugged their coca-cola bottle shaped torsos, and as they strutted their heavy hips on the stage, the motley audience could not help but applaud noiselessly.
All 10 stunners adorned their well chiselled necks and wrists with vivid bead-necklaces and bracelets that complemented their queenly African looks.
After answering questions from the judges; presenting messages on various issues concerning Africa and dancing to some rocking music, the pageant referees decided on Azizatu Zakaria, a graduate from the University For Development Studies, UDS.
She was closely followed by Eugenia Selinam Atidepe, an undergraduate of the University of Ghana and Dilys Zahabi, of the Wisconsin University College, who came second and third respectively.
According to the organisers, XYZ Agency, the queen will have as her prize, an official car (Hyundai Atos) for one year, cash, jewellery, airline ticket to any African country of her choice and some sponsors’ products. The runners-up will also receive cash prizes, jewellery, airline tickets and sponsors’ products.
Singers, Ewurasi, Screwface, Andy Frimpong Manso and his group entertained the invited audience.
The event was supported by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation and formed part of activities marking this year’s Africa Union Day, (May 25), in Ghana.
Last year’s show, which was the maiden event, attracted contestants from nine African countries. The queen from Ghana, Monica Mbillah, was crowned “Miss Africa Queen 2006” at the finals held in Accra.
According to the organisers, contestants from about 20 African countries had registered to participate in this year’s continental show.
The event is sponsored by Hyundai, Unique Trust Financial Services, Pepsi, Slok Air, ABC Wax and New Jersey Jewellery. Others are MVP Hair Products, Premier Productions, Karrington, GTV, Joy FM and Fredina Tours.
