CEO of Fredyma Studios, Fred Kyei Mensah has declared his readiness to institute legal action against Celestine Doe, known on the gospel music scene as Celestine Donkor, for allegedly using his work without seeking his approval.
According to Fredyma, out of the eleven songs on Celestine’s latest album titled Gye Woadie, four were jointly produced by the two of them in his studio at Adabraka in Accra.
Fredyma who got wind of Celestine’s latest album told Beatwaves “Celestine and myself composed and recorded the songs, Emu Nnsem, Hyeme Ma, Sei Won Ndwuma and Psalm 23 which were among the eleven songs on her current CD album, between 2004 and 2005, before she got married to her husband.
Although I lost contact with her, I did not bother because I wanted her to enjoy her fresh marriage for sometime before we go back to the studio to continue the production of the album.
“Sometime ago, Celestine came to me for a copy of the CD which contains the songs we composed and produced together to give to a music producer who wants to assist her in her musical career.”
Since then, Fred said, he did not hear from her again about the songs until recently when he learned about her latest album containing the songs they had composed together.
Celestine neither compensated him nor gave him any credits for his contributions toward the said album, he added.
According to him, even though the two of them had agreed to work together for free, Celestine broke the agreement by sending the songs to another producer to work on without his knowledge.
Thus, he said, he wanted to take legal action against Celestine for giving “their work” to someone else to work on without the two of them approving of it.
The record engineer and a producer further alleged that he composed the rhythms in all the songs.
He claimed also that he produced Celestine’s first album titled Yesu Dwen Woho, adding that they both composed and arranged all the songs on the said album, which did not do well on the market.
When Celestine was contacted on phone concerning the issue, she confirmed working with Fred but denied his involvement in the composition of those songs.
She however said Fred composed the rhythms and beats while she composed all the lyrics.
When asked whether the songs in question were jointly composed by them she replied in the affirmative but stressed it was only Emu Nnsem that was composed by both of them, which she agreed to compensate Fredyma for.
Celestine disclosed that she gave the album to Wayoosi Music Productions to produce because “Fredyma was not serious to work on it as he kept on postponing production.”
A source close to Wayoosi Music said that the company bought the CD album outright from Celestine and that Fredyma should sort things out with her, not Wayoosi Music.
