ABUGISS win cocoa quiz competition
Koforidua, Sept 29, GNA - The Aburi Girls Secondary School has won the maiden Cocoa Quiz competition organised for some secondary schools in the Eastern Region at Koforidua on Thursday. Aburi Girls won with 27 points, beating Pope John''s Secondary School, Koforidua, St Peter''s Secondary School at Akwatia and Oda Secondary School in a keenly contested competition. It is to represent the Eastern Region for the national competition on Sunday in Accra.
The Cocoa Quiz competition was instituted this year to educate the youth on the nutritional and health value of cocoa. It is being sponsored by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, the Cocoa Board, Ghana Telecom (GT) and the Ghana Association of Science Teachers (GAST).
Speaking at the function, Mr Adjetey Sowah, the Deputy Eastern Regional Director of Education, said the performance of the schools at the contest proved that the education sector was up to the task of producing scholars for the development of the nation. He urged all students to learn more about cocoa so as to propagate the benefits of the product to their parents and called for support for the winning school to win the national contest to make the region proud. Mr Yaw Barimah, the Eastern Regional Minister, spoke about the importance and the history of cocoa and expressed the hope that the quiz would bring to light more about the product.
Aburi Girls took home a prize of 700,000 cedis cash and a quantity of cocoa products, St Peter''s who came second received 450,000 cedis and cocoa products whiles ODASCO and Pope John''s received 250,000 cedis and cocoa products each for the third and fourth positions, respectively. 29 Sept 05Source: GNA
