Dutch rebuked over CO2 emission plans 1/17/2007
AMSTERDAM — The European Commission has rebuked the Netherlands for doing too little to reduce global warming CO2 emissions.

The EC said on Tuesday it had rejected both the Dutch and Belgian plans to reduce CO2 emissions in the period 2008-12

The Dutch and Belgian governments had planned to set the limits for carbon dioxide emissions at 90 and 63 tons respectively.

But the EC wants the Netherlands to reduce its target by 5 percent to 86 tons, while Belgium must restrict emissions to 59 tons.

The EC is checking the greenhouse gas emission plans of all member states against the limits agreed in the Kyoto protocol.

It had earlier informed nine other member states that their plans were inadequate.

The EU wants an 8 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2012 compared with 1990 levels. That target was set by the Kyoto Protocol.
