AMSTERDAM — Some 960 people were treated for burns from fireworks during the recent New Year''''''''s celebrations compared with 660 in 2005/06.
That represented a rise of 46 percent, the consumer safety foundation said on Monday.
About 10 percent of victims had to be hospitalised. It was the first increase in fireworks injuries in six years.
The injuries occurred in the period 24 December to 5 January.
Environment Minister Pieter van Geel will now launch an inquiry into the strong rise in serious fireworks injuries.
Most people were hurt because they lit the firework wrongly, rather than because they were using illegal fireworks.
