| 50pc more fines for illegal labour in 2006 |

AMSTERDAM – The labour inspectorate issued 50 percent more fines for illegal labour last year than in 2005.
The inspection agency of the Ministry of Social Affairs imposed 3,197 fines on employers in 2006 for employing foreigners without the proper documentation. Only 2,130 fines were issued in 2005.
A spokesperson for the labour inspectorate announced the figures on Wednesday.
She said that the increase in fines was the logical result of the fact that the inspectorate conducted more checks for illegal labour last year. The number of inspections climbed to 10,500 last year, compared to 8,600 in 2005.
Since 2005, the labour inspectorate can fine employers up to EUR 8,000 per illegal worker. Checks for illegal labour have also been stepped up.
Private individuals who hire a Pole to clean or do odd jobs around the house can also be regarded as employers.
Checks were carried out at 296 private premises in the first six months of 2006 and 91 fines were issued. The labour inspectorate generally carries out a check at a private home after receiving a tip-off.
