AMSTERDAM - The public prosecution department (OM) announced on Tuesday that it has started an “exploratory preliminary investigation” into statements from the “interpreter” at the Assoena mosque in Amsterdam.
Based on this preliminary investigation the justice department will decide whether the so-called interpreter will be criminally prosecuted.
A man claiming he was an interpreter for the mosque had told university newspaper Folia that student cabaret performer Ewout Jansen could be “killed” because of his jokes about Muslims and Islam.
The mosque and city alderman Ahmed Aboutaleb say the comments were made by a “visitor.”
Although it has emerged that the man in question did serve in the mosque’s leadership in the past, a spokesperson for alderman Aboutaleb stressed that the man no longer holds any official position. “What matters to us is that the current leadership and imam of the mosque have distanced themselves from the man’s statements.”
The justice department has ordered the police to gather information and ascertain the status of the persons involved.
