Censored Dictionary to Be Released 1/31/2007
31 January 2007

AMSTERDAM — Dictionaries publisher Van Dale releases a censored dictionary in March. The new book is a Dutch explanatory dictionary for Christian primary schools.

The new dictionary will contain no vulgarisms, curses and euphemisms for those. Even the small number of invective words and expressions included in the ordinary dictionary for primary schoolchildren has been scrapped.

Van Dale’s Lexicography Editor Theo de Boer told Het Nederlands Dagblad on Wednesday that the new dictionary appeared after the publishing house had been approached by the teachers of Staphorst, a town famous for its strict religious atmosphere.

A director and an administrator of a group comprising five reformist primary schools in Staphorst had been reportedly shocked by the ordinary school dictionaries Van Dale makes.
